One of the best ways to treat knee pain is to strengthen the muscles that support and act on the knee.

Oftentimes it is weakness in these important muscles that affects the function of your knee and leads to pain over time.

WHICH MUSCLES CONTROL THE KNEE?

There are three primary muscle groups that cross your knee joint - the quads, the hamstrings, and one of your calf muscles (gastrocnemius).

Increasing strength in these areas can dramatically reduce pain you’re experiencing in your knee and help you to feel better. That’s exactly what I wanted to show you in this video.

HOW TO STRENGTHEN YOUR KNEE

Strengthening the muscles that cross your knee joint are a great way to increase stability and function in the joint.

Quadriceps - the muscles on your thigh that extend the knee from a flexed (bent) position.

Hamstrings - the muscles on the back of your thigh that flex (bend) your knee from a straightened position.

Gastrocnemius - one of your two calf muscles that crosses the knee joint in the back and serves to flex your foot downwards at your ankle.

By regularly performing exercises that increase strength in these areas you can improve stability and decrease pain in your knee joints.

EXERCISES FOR KNEE STRENGTH

I present these exercises in sets for beginners (those who are weak/have little strength or those experiencing significant knee pain), intermediate (those with a little less pain and a little more strength), and advanced (those with very little pain and are ready for challenging strengthening exercises).
