BEST MATTRESS FOR BACK AND NECK PAIN?
Your spine is a miraculous structure. It has to be very mobile to allow us to move in all planes of motion, but it has to also be very supportive to hold up our bodies all day long. It can move in three planes of motion - bending forward/backward, side-to-side, and rotating - but it also needs to be very strong throughout these motions.

The best mattress for back and neck pain is actually the one that will support your spine in a neutral position. This means your back doesn’t bow to the left or to the right, it doesn’t flex forward or extend backward, and there’s no rotation especially in your neck (sorry stomach sleepers!).

Your mattress’s ability to hold your spine in this neutral position depend primarily on your body type and the composition of your mattress.

BEST MATTRESS FOR YOUR BODY TYPE
Unfortunately, it’s impossible for me to give you one type or one brand name of mattress that’s going to be the absolute best for every body type. I can, however, share a few guidelines that will help guide you in your decision.

The main determining factor in helping you to select the right mattress is your body type. If you are small or petite you might enjoy a softer mattress made of foam simply because you don’t sink into it quite as deep. It can be very soft to lay on yet provide adequate support for your spine to hold it in a neutral position.

Conversely, if you’re a little larger you might benefit more from a hybrid mattress - one that’s made of foam and springs. The foam is usually the top layer which adds comfort, but if you’re larger the risk you run is compressing right through the foam and not having enough support through the night. If you select a hybrid mattress that is composed of foam and springs, you can compress through the foam but then receive added support from the springs.

SLEEPING HOT OR COOL
Foam mattresses seem to sleep a little warmer. As your body compresses into the foam it tends to envelop you a little more and minimize air flow. The result is you sleep a little warmer on a foam mattress.

If, however, you’re looking to sleep a little cooler, you might select a mattress that is supportive but without the deep foam that wraps around and conforms to your body.

MATTRESSES REVIEWED IN THIS VIDEO

PUFFY MATTRESS (3:29): 10-12 inches of soft foam; this is the softest mattress we review in this video. https://bit.ly/2G6fbUh

NECTAR MATTRESS (6:10): Multiple layers of different foams including gel and memory foam. Great “medium firm” mattress. https://bit.ly/2S4VVLJ

PURPLE MATTRESS (8:37): Featuring a layer of a polymeric “elastic comfort grid” that’s adaptive, soft and supportive. Built on a layer of foam (old model) or springs (new models) for comfort and support. https://bit.ly/32bhIWy

DREAMCLOUD MATTRESS (13:22): Great hybrid mattress with a memory foam layer on top of springs. The firmest of the four mattresses in this review; ideal for “larger” bodies where more support is necessary. https://bit.ly/2XEWgdW
