The Comecrudo language was an indigenous language spoken in Northeastern Nuevo Leon and Northern Tamaulipas, Mexico, and Southeastern Texas, United States. The language was registered by many scholars, missionaries, and explorers such as Albert Gatschet and Jean Louis Berlandier during the Texas exploration, after the war between Mexico and the United States.
It was spoken by the Comecrudo-Carrizo tribes throughout the Rio Grande and was divided into several dialects. It belonged to the Comecrudan languages, a group of languages from Texas, Tamaulipas, and Nuevo Leon, which also includes the Garza and Mamulique languages.
It’s possible that it was related to the Pakawan languages, to which the Cotoname and Coahuilteco languages and others belong, due to its great resemblance, and possibly, also to the Tonkawa and Karankawa languages.
The language died in 1902, but this tribe is still alive, and its members are very active politically, mainly in activities related to tribal-indigenous autonomy rights, pro-immigration activism, ecologic activism, etc.
