There is one part of being a graphic designer that is so important, even likely more important than making the design itself. However, a lot of designers out there either neglect this thing, or don't even know about it.

In the world of graphic design and as part of being a graphic designer, you need to understand that you need to make 2 important steps. Firstly you need a potential client or employer to look at you and your work, and say 'yes' to bringing you onto a project. Without this you won't get any work. A lot of this comes down to your portfolio and how that design portfolio reflects your work and peaks interest in someone else.
Secondly, you need that same person to then look at your design work and again say 'yes' to giving you money for that design. So you need 2 yes's from employers or clients, and this is where a lot of people fail. You could have awesome design skills, but if you can't get work or effectively communicate and sell your designs, you won't get very far at all.
