MANAGEMENT AT THE FLOWERING STAGE for watermelon farming :
This stage starts from the 35th to 45th day after germination.
The stage is characterized by mass flower production.
Male flowers come out first and the female flowers follow thereafter.
Male flowers have pollen in them that will pollinate the female flower.
Female flowers have a bulge behind them that will turn into a watermelon.
The ratio of male to female flowers is 4:1
Watermelon fruit setting relies on bees and other beneficiary insects who distribute pollen.
Farmers should ensure there are enough bees on the farm for successful pollination.
Insecticides to be used should not be harmful to pollinators.
The sprays are to be done early in the mornings when the bees are not actively foraging.
