Solar power generation at home with a grid-connected system allows households to use sunlight to generate electricity and also export surplus power to the electricity grid.

The process begins with installing solar panels on the rooftop, which absorb sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity.

This DC power is then converted into alternating current (AC) by an inverter, making it suitable for household use.

A grid-tied system is connected to the main electricity supply line and includes a bi-directional net meter.

During the daytime, the solar system powers home appliances. If the solar panels produce more electricity than needed, the excess is automatically sent to the grid. At night or during cloudy weather, when solar production is low, electricity is drawn from the grid.

The net meter keeps track of both imported (from the grid) and exported (to the grid) electricity. At the end of the billing cycle, the electricity bill reflects only the net usage. If exported units exceed imported ones, the consumer gets credits or payments, depending on the state's net metering policy.

This setup reduces electricity bills, promotes renewable energy use, and can even generate income by selling excess power to the electricity company.
