Aside from light, your soil is the #1 determining factor of your garden's success. I get DMs, emails, and comments constantly from people asking me to troubleshoot their plants, when the issue is likely within the soil!
First understanding your soil pH is vital. If it's not in the right range, nutrient uptake is inhibited. Next, knowing if you have too much or too little of the essential macronutrients, micronutrients, and trace minerals plants need is the next step.
I have an entire video on plant nutrient deficiencies as well, so you COULD spot some of these by visual inspection. But if you're planning to grow in your garden for years to come, it makes sense to invest in soil testing by a professional lab to get the actual data on what your soil is or isn't lacking, and make adjustments from there.
