Garlic Needs Space. That's what we've always been taught. 4 inches spacing between each clove when you plant them and 2 inches from the sides of the bed or pot. We plant them that way every year without question and get great harvests.

But what if we didn't?

What if we spaced them close, but not too close? What if we doubled our planting concentration of the bulbs by halving the spacing? Would we get smaller bulbs, but more yield overall? Would the crop suffer and do worse?

So many questions. I wish someone had the foresight 10 months ago to plan an experiment where they planted identical planter boxes using the same soil, same seed source, and exact same conditions so we could test such a thing.....

Oh wait, someone did!
