High Intensity Diodes (HID) such as High Pressure Sodium (HPS) and Metal Halide (MH) are out of the realm of most home growers, often requiring
special ballasts and external cooling solutions.

LED bulbs were not viable until only recently, being either too weak to provide adequate lumens, or only providing an extreme side of the spectrum. Now, they are very much a viable solution, often preferred. Their only drawback being the high initial buy in cost.

CFL bulbs are not quite as efficient as LED bulbs, but the barrier of entry is so low, that even in the long run, you can still come out ahead! Aim for 6500K light intensity ("Daylight" bulbs in retail) and your seedlings, clones, small plants, and microgreens will grow like crazy!
