Convert Columns to Rows in Excel using Power Query. Convert Wide Data to Long Format in Excel with Power Query. This is when you have multiple columns in a wide spreadsheet like the min, mid, and max of a salary range across columns, and we need to transform that into a long version that has the three salary zones listed down on multiple rows instead. You may need this for analysis or a database upload format. Now, even if you don't know Power Query, don't worry this is very easy and I'm going to show you how this can be done quickly without copying formulas or trying to manually transpose the spreadsheet.

Converting data from a "wide" format (multiple columns representing different attributes of the same data point, like the minimum, midpoint, and maximum of a single salary range) to a "long" format (fewer columns with more rows, where each row represents a single attribute and its corresponding value, like the three salary zones of a range listed down instead of across) is often necessary for data analysis and reporting, or for formatting for database uploads.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to reshape your data using Power Query by unpivoting columns into a clean row-based format. We’ll walk through a real-world HR use case using a salary grade table with Min, Mid, and Max values—perfect for analysis, pivot tables, or database uploads. Great for Excel users in HR, analytics, or anyone working with structured data.
