Electric Vehicle Motors – IV | Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) | Torque Production | Four-Quadrant Operation | Asymmetric Bridge Converter | Lecture 26
The Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) is an attractive traction motor for electric vehicles due to its simple and robust construction. In this lecture, we continue the study of SRM by exploring its operating principle, electrical angle, pole pitch, phase excitation, and torque production. The relationship between rotor position and electrical angle is explained using a 6/8 SRM, along with the concept that one rotor pole pitch corresponds to 360° electrical. This lecture further develops the equivalent circuit model and power conversion process of the SRM. You will learn how the position-dependent phase inductance L(θ) leads to the fundamental SRM torque equation, and how torque is produced through the variation of inductance with rotor position. The motoring and generating modes, four-quadrant operation, and phase current control are also discussed. Finally, the asymmetric bridge converter is introduced for independent excitation and current control of each SRM phase, including its different switching modes and the corresponding phase voltages.
