In this lecture, I will introduce the concept of degrees of freedom and apply it to the multiphase, multicomponent system, thus arriving at the Gibbs phase rule. I will demonstrate the application of Gibbs phase rule on the phase diagram of pure water. I will extend the Gibbs phase rule for intensive variables to also include extensive variables.
