In this lecture, I will discuss the three energy contributions -- thermal, mechanical and chemical energy, from a molecular perspective. I will use it to derive the thermodynamic expressions for different types of systems and introduce the notion of controlled (independent) and dependent variables and energy functions. I will conclude with a discussion of the laws of thermodynamics.
