This lecture introduces aurora as the final outcome of magnetospheric–ionospheric–thermospheric coupling with the solar wind and IMF (p.8). It explains atmospheric interaction with different parts of the solar spectrum (X-ray, UV, visible, IR) and discusses ionization and dissociation thresholds (p.4–6). The concept of magnetic pressure and plasma beta (β) is introduced to understand magnetic field control over plasma
