This lecture examines the evolution of contemporary gathering spaces such as museums and cultural institutions, highlighting how their role has shifted from formal “temples of culture” to open, inclusive, and interactive public spaces. It discusses how modern museums integrate architecture, technology, and public life, creating immersive experiences rather than simply housing artworks. Through examples such as the Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Tate Modern, MAXXI Museum, and Louvre Abu Dhabi, the lecture explains how cultural buildings act as urban landmarks, catalysts for regeneration, and civic spaces. It also explores architectural principles like flexibility, transparency, technology integration, sustainability, and large column-free universal spaces, illustrated through projects such as Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie, demonstrating how contemporary architecture redefines spaces for collective gathering and cultural exchange.
