This lecture focuses on the importance and current status of springs in India, which are a critical water source for many communities, particularly in the Himalayan region. Springs contribute significantly to major rivers like the Ganga, with only 29% of its water sourced from glaciers, the rest from springs. However, the discharge of springs is declining due to increased water demand, land use changes, ecological degradation, and climate change. Approximately 50% of the springs in India have dried up or become seasonal, affecting both the local water supply and the hydrology of rivers. Efforts to revive these springs are ongoing, considering the complex geology of the region and the diverse nature of aquifers feeding these springs.
