This lecture continues the previous discussion to elaborate on the zone of aeration, which is influenced by topography, geology, climate, drainage, and vegetation. It details the water-bearing and water-yielding characteristics of the vadose zone, which affect water percolation to the zone of saturation. The vadose zone is divided into soil water, pellicular water, and capillary fringe water, each with distinct properties and behaviours. Additionally, the lecture explains the zone of saturation, which varies in thickness based on underlying rock formations, and the types of subsurface water, such as connate, meteoric, magmatic, and volcanic water. Finally, the water table is discussed, including its dependence on topography, geological structure, recharge and discharge areas, and permeability characteristics of rocks.
