Welcome to this video on how recurrent neural networks work! Recurrent neural networks, or RNNs, are a type of artificial neural network that are particularly well-suited for processing sequential data, such as time series or natural language.
RNNs are different from traditional neural networks in that they have a "memory" component, which allows them to remember previous input and use that information to process current input. This makes them very effective for tasks such as language translation or speech recognition, where the meaning of a word or phrase depends on the context in which it is used.
To understand how RNNs work, let's start by looking at the basic structure of a traditional neural network. A neural network consists of layers of interconnected "neurons," which are essentially mathematical functions that process input and produce output. The input is fed through the network, and each neuron in each layer applies a transformation to the input, using weights and biases that are learned during training.
In an RNN, each neuron in a layer is connected not only to the neurons in the next layer, but also to the neurons in the same layer at the previous time step. This creates a loop within the network, allowing the RNN to process sequential data one time step at a time.
There are several types of RNNs, including long short-term memory (LSTM) networks and gated recurrent unit (GRU) networks, which have different mechanisms for storing and using the "memory" component.
Overall, RNNs are a powerful tool for processing sequential data and are widely used in a variety of applications, including natural language processing, speech recognition, and time series forecasting.
