Radiation safety in nuclear medicine,
in this course focuses on the principles, practices, and regulations required to ensure safe use of radioactive materials in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. It introduces radiation physics, types of radiation, and methods of measuring exposure. Students learn about radiation units, dose limits, and biological effects of ionizing radiation on patients, staff, and the environment. The course emphasizes radiation protection principles—time, distance, and shielding—along with safe handling, storage, and disposal of radionuclides. Practical training includes use of dosimeters, monitoring devices, and contamination control procedures. Special attention is given to patient safety, minimizing unnecessary exposure, and applying ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) standards. The legal and ethical aspects of radiation use, including international guidelines and quality assurance programs, are also covered. By the end, participants gain the knowledge and skills needed to work safely in nuclear medicine, balancing effective imaging and therapy with the highest safety standards. المعهد الفني الصحي
